Car Seats For Infants
You have to make sure that the child fits perfectly in the car seat. The car seat must allow you to put your child rear-facing. That is to remain that way until reach one year old or 20 pounds. If your child is not yet one year old but is already big enough, then you can put your baby the other way.
You can buy an infant only car seat or the convertible one. The car seats for infant are very small as they are really manufactured to securely hold the baby in place. They have carrying handles to allow you to carry it around without having to use a separate stroller.
Look for one that is easily installed but locks the baby in place. Buying a car seat that will require twenty minutes to install has higher chances of installation errors. That will only put the baby in danger rather than protect him. It would be nice if you can find a car seat that can be permanently in your car. This will save you time when all you need to do is get the baby instead of having to install the car seat each time you need to travel.
You also have to make sure that it locks in place. The last thing you need is to have to adjust the buckles every five minutes. This is not safe for the baby, for your and for other motorists. For infants, you need that one that locks five ways. There should a strap for each shoulder, each thigh and the belt that goes across.
Since 2002, car seat are required that it be attached directly into the car instead of attaching it via a seat belt. This is to further ensure the baby's safety.
Last is the hygiene. Don't buy a second hand one as you are never completely sure how that car seat was used or where it had been. You baby's safety is much more important than any amount you will ever save.
